Bus Shelters

Bus Shelter Replacement Programme

Wokingham Borough Council currently has 20 bus shelters that are managed and maintained by an external company. This not only saves the Council money on maintenance and installation costs but also provides an income as we receive a proportion of the income made by any advertising on these shelters.

The most recent contract for these shelters has finished and the Council retendered this opportunity earlier this year. This contract has now been taken over by a new company.

Most of the bus shelters covered by this contract are now old, in poor condition, and in need of replacement. The existing supplier will remove their shelter first (reusing them elsewhere, where possible) and then our new supplier will replace these shelters with new, modern, environmentally friendly and sustainably produced shelters. Some of these shelters will also benefit from further enhancements such as a green or solar roof or an electrical advertising screen.

The following table sets out the locations of the shelters to be removed. Please note the dates shown were planned at the start of the programme, however, they are subject to change depending on factors outside of the contractor’s control (e.g. emergency roadworks, poor weather conditions).

It should be noted that if any of the bus shelters contain digital Real Time Information (RTI) screens, which indicate the next bus times, these will be removed a few days before the shelters’ removal to prevent damage and will be reinstalled in the days following the new shelters’ installation.
