Celebrate Age Event at Loddon Valley Leisure Centre

International day of older persons on 1 October 2019 saw Wokingham Borough Council holding an activity packed Celebrate Age event for over 60s at Loddon Valley Leisure Centre also including information stalls, health and wellbeing tasters and homemade cakes from Addington school!

My Journey team took our electric bike, a normal 2 wheeler and a folding bike for adults to try out on the tennis courts and willing participants kept the instructors busy all day long!  Even the Borough Mayor and Deputy Leader of the Council joined in and were greatly impressed with the electric bike.  Our local bike shops are selling more electric bikes than children’s bikes at the moment and it’s not just for the older person as the assistance it provides is attractive to any adult wanting some help up a hill!

The team also engaged with nigh on 100 people on the day, handing out flyers for our adult cycle training and promoting our Shine cycle sessions and Breeze rides.  As well as handing out a multitude of cycle maps there was interest in the walks round the Borough and public transport, so much that we ran out of bus maps though a journey planner can be found on the My Journey website.  Everyone we spoke to was positive, active, pleasant and interested in what was on offer in the Borough so it was a lovely event for staff too.  The plans are for Celebrate Age to be run annually from now and will definitely benefit our growing older population who are keen to travel sustainably and leave the car at home!
