Cycling is proving to have great effects on mental health in Wokingham Borough
My Journey Wokingham, Sustrans and Sport in Mind have started to run free weekly rides to help improve mental health locally, and to give those who suffer from mental health conditions an opportunity to get outside and enjoy exploring some quiet off-road routes with a supportive and friendly group.
The rides all start from Wokingham Borough Council’s ‘Shack on the Track’ in Finchampstead, and there are bikes and helmets available to borrow at no cost. We cycle at a gentle pace suitable for all abilities, and the rides usually last for between 30 minutes to an hour, followed by an opportunity to chat over a cup of tea and perhaps even a cake (or a banana!).
All those who have ridden with us so far are really enjoying getting back on a bike after a long time without cycling, and finding that riding through the woods is a great release and brings out your inner child!
Jason, who has been riding with the group says ‘the cycling group is a brilliant addition to the Sport In Mind programme – I used to love cycling but haven’t been on my bike for years. I’m enjoying exploring new places and going out on my bike gives me focus, and burns some energy in a positive way’
Rides will begin again on the 11th January – further details can be found on the events page.
