First Bikeability Learn to Ride sessions for children since lockdown

On Thursday and Friday last week (13th & 14th August) our team of My Journey Wokingham cycling instructors ran some Bikeability Learn to Ride sessions for children – for  the first time since lockdown in March. Sessions took place in the sports halls at the FBC centre at Finchampstead and at Woodford Park Leisure Centre in Woodley. The sessions were for children of school age who were struggling to ride a pedal bike without stabilisers and the children who attended ranged in age from 4 years to 9 years.

Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, our sessions had to run rather differently to the way they were in the past, with smaller groups of children and more involvement of parents in training their own child. The instructors were there to help, give instructions and advice and demonstrate but had to socially distance themselves from the children. Nevertheless, the parents rose to the occasion and we had some great successes, with more than half of the children pedalling around the hall by the end of the session, with big grins on their faces!

Over the 2 days, the team trained a total of 36 children and 20 of them successfully learned to ride a pedal bike unaided after attending just 1 or 2 sessions. The others who attended all had fun learning to balance and glide on a balance bike and this prepares them well for the next step towards learning to ride.

Thank you to the parents who emailed us with some great feedback after the sessions. Here are comments from two of them:

“My daughter took part in a Learn to Ride session at Woodford Park yesterday. In nearly 9 years of parenting two children, it is the best £5 I ever spent. Not only did she LOVE the session, she got on her bike today and rode brilliantly without stabilisers. Just amazing! So proud. Thank you.”   Emma T.

“Thank you again for this morning’s session. Both girls absolutely loved it and are itching to return tomorrow. S’s improvement today was amazing. Just as importantly, J is now really convinced about learning to ride without her stabilisers.  As well as the girls, both my husband and I learnt so much. Both the other instructors were so welcoming and helpful too. Thank you all.”      Petrina K.
