Get on your bike event at Reading University
The My Journey Wokingham team were at Reading University on 3rd October for their “Get on your bike” event and talked to over 80 students about cycling and sustainable travel.
Students were given the opportunity to buy second-hand bikes from the Recycle Your Cycle charity, which supports prisoner reform by teaching prisoners to rebuild and fix old bikes.
There were also bikes to hire, from the University’s bike hire scheme and new bikes for sale from Cycle Republic, as well as bike lights and bike locks for sale.
The My Journey team offered free Smoothies (by pedalling our Smoothie bike) and cycling information and sold cycle helmets to students at reasonable prices. There was also a Doctor Bike surgery for students to get their own bikes checked and the opportunity to sign up for free beginner cycle skills sessions with a qualified instructor.
The event was very successful – It ran for 4 hours and, for the whole time, there was a queue of students for the bike hire scheme and for Doctor Bike checks and all of the second-hand bikes were sold well before the end.
