Cycle to School Week: A Simple Change with Big Benefits

Cycle to School Week is a fantastic opportunity for pupils, parents and schools to celebrate the benefits of active travel and discover how cycling can become part of everyday life.

Cycling to school is more than just a way to get from A to B. It helps children build healthy habits, develop independence and arrive at school feeling energised and ready to learn. Even replacing a few car journeys each week with a bike ride can have a positive impact on physical wellbeing, mental health and the environment.

Why cycle to school?

Improves health and wellbeing

Regular physical activity helps children stay healthy, improves fitness and supports mental wellbeing. A cycle ride before school can boost concentration and help pupils feel more alert in the classroom.

Supports a greener future

Choosing to cycle instead of travelling by car helps reduce traffic congestion and lowers carbon emissions. With many families making small changes to their travel habits, the collective impact can be significant.

Builds confidence and independence

Cycling gives young people the opportunity to develop road awareness, decision-making skills and confidence. These valuable life skills can benefit them both on and off the bike.

Strengthens Communities

Seeing more children and families travelling actively creates safer, more vibrant neighbourhoods. Cycle to School Week encourages communities to come together and support healthier, more sustainable travel choices.

Getting involved

There are lots of ways to take part in Cycle to School Week:

  • Cycle to school for one day or the whole week.
  • Organise a "bike bus" where families ride together on a planned route - contact us if you would like help or advice with this.
  • Check your bike is roadworthy before setting off.
  • Encourage friends and classmates to take part.
  • Share your cycling journey and celebrate your achievements.

Safety first

Before riding, always ensure your bike is in good condition. Check your tyres, brakes, chain and lights.  Visit Walk Wheel Cycle Trust for advice on checking your bike in 11 steps. Helmet Safety: Always wear a helmet. A properly fitted helmet reduces the risk of head injuries significantly. For fitting guidance, watch this video from Bikeability.

Planning a safe route and riding with friends or family can also help make the journey more enjoyable.

Every ride counts

Cycle to School Week is a reminder that small changes can make a big difference. Whether it's cycling every day or just once during the week, every journey helps create healthier lifestyles, safer streets and a cleaner environment.

So dust off your bike, pump up the tyres and join the thousands of pupils choosing an active start to the school day. Every ride counts!

Find out how to take part by visiting the Bikeability's website.
