Ditch the Car Event

At the first Ditch the Car event on Friday 17 September,  Beat the Street and the Wokingham Air Quality Project turned Elms Field into an active travel event to show the residents of Wokingham alternatives to using the car in the run up to World Car Free day  which took place on the 22 September.

Highlights of the day included the future young generation of cyclists trying out the My Journey balance bikes, for one little one it was the first time they had been on a balance bike and they loved it!

Making healthy delicious smoothie using just pedal power alone.

The Borough Mayor, Cllr Keith Baker, arrived in his hybrid car to help us celebrate the massive successes of Beat the Street. The well-deserved winners of the community teams and the overall individual winners received their prizes from the Borough Mayor.

Wokingham WATCH group Watch (Wokingham Active Travel Community Hub) came down on their electric tandem and had a great afternoon promoting safe routes to ride and new active travel routes in Wokingham. Find out more on their Facebook page

Electric bikes (e-bikes) offer a speedy, eco-friendly alternative to the car for short journeys. E-bikes have come a long way in the last few years, with mountain bikes and folding versions; e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular. AW Cycles brought four e-bikes for members of the public to test ride for free which was great fun.

Another popular activity for our children and families was Beat the Street bingo and an orienteering challenge with the My Journey Team.

Finally the ever popular Dr Bike made an appearance fixing lots of bike that required his practical touch and some much needed bike TLC.

Thank you to everybody who attended the event and made it successful.
