The Wokingham Walking Challenge

Walking together is a simple way to spend time as a family. It gives you fresh air, space to chat and a chance to slow things down for a few minutes.

The Wokingham Walking Challenge is a fun, printable activity to help make short walks more enjoyable for children. It’s designed for everyday journeys you’re already doing – like the school run, a walk to the park or a quick trip to the shops.

There’s no right distance and no pressure. Every step counts.

What is the Walking Challenge?

The challenge turns an ordinary walk into a little adventure.

Children are encouraged to spot simple things along the way, like a colourful door, a pet or a tall tree. There are also playful walking tasks to try, such as taking giant steps, counting dogs or choosing a walk leader for the route.

At the end of the walk, families are prompted to talk about what they noticed and how the walk felt. These small moments help children feel proud of what they’ve done and more confident about walking again.

When can we use it?

The Walking Challenge works best when walking already fits into your day. You might use it:

  • On the school run
  • During a weekend stroll
  • When popping out locally instead of driving

You don’t need special shoes, equipment or lots of time. Just print it out and take it with you.

Why it works

Making walking playful helps children stay interested and can make it feel easier for parents to get out of the door. Spotting things, chatting and laughing together can turn a routine journey into quality time.

Because the walks are short and familiar, they’re easier to repeat - helping children build confidence and healthy habits over time.

To celebrate those little wins, we’ve also created a printable certificate for young walkers who make every step count.

You can download both the Walking Challenge activity sheet and the certificate in the Related downloads section.

Every step counts – however far you go.
